Observing people in public places can be a very entertaining and revealing pastime. Who hasn't done so in the tram, for instance? We're always fascinated by all the diversity and quite often would like to snap a few pics but end up not doing so in fear of being misunderstood. This time I managed to simply ask this guy who had been painting minutes before and who agreed smilingly.
Thinking about it, I should do a whole series on people in public transportation...
Very unique shot. It's always fun just to observe the world around one self. I myself try to get better at it! Nice photo! Thomas Solberg / Project neXus @ 2006-July-7 12:55
Nice capture! It's tough taking pictures of people in public, some will frown and others will smile. Michael @ 2006-July-7 13:23
I like that we don't see the face. Sometimes it leaves more to imagine about a person or situation. As always, such great colour! I would love to see a series of people in public, please do consider one! percym @ 2006-July-7 18:01
you continue to amaze me with your uncanny ability to capture the whimsicle, yet keep an air of seriousness and somber to the photos you take. i enjoy your work immensely and i hope you continue on the path you're headed on!
ps. i love this, it's filled with character. congrats on being a keen people observer, as most artists are. nam @ 2006-July-8 00:26
So you overcame the fear of being misunderstood? Well, the price was a cool shot! :-) I like it, also the color and texture of the seats. Kris @ 2006-July-8 07:53
Thank you for the thoughtful comments!
@Kris: Yeah, luckily Ella was with me so I had an alibi for not being "interested" in him ;) Sebastian @ 2006-July-8 11:49
Huch, äh, huch.
Da zuckt die Maushand und will nach oben scrollen. Und dann ist da gar nichts.
Aufmerksamkeit durch Enttäuschung. Seeehr wirksam ;-) grapf @ 2006-July-8 13:01
I like the ambiguity of the subject. If your comments didn't indicate his smile, I'd never know if he was glaring, sleeping, or looking wistfully out the window. Mysteries are always cool.
And congrats on being so "hot" on photoblogs.org lately! Brandon @ 2006-July-8 20:01
really good idea about doing a series of public transport people ;) I reckon it would rock if you continued like this... showing anything but faces, or maybe couple them up (body part shot... and then a standard portrait! might do this myself now :S not transport wise tho???)... anyway, love the colours and the DOF ;) JD @ 2006-July-8 21:28
Probably many people will get uneasy with a huge SLR pointed at them in public transportations. They are either tired going home, or sleepy going to work. Also it's forbidden to take pics around NYC subway system, big cameras take attention, but ppl with small mobile phone cameras enjoy the shooting :-(. But yours was a very good opportunity indeed :-) I like it. Emré @ 2006-July-10 06:34
I wish I had the guts to ask people for photos.
This photo is good, it shows enough to get me wondering what happened and where was he painting mjm @ 2008-February-25 12:53
