We're all a little sick of playing the cowboy 2006-06-2814 Comments
After a good week without updates, here's something for you!
This is a frame from the computer animation "Ashes to Ashes" I did with three fellow students as a term project. None of us had done 3D animation before, so it was a great learning experience. I mainly took care of post-production, editing and sounddesign. Some words from the description:
'Arizona, where the desert sun makes the brains of the prickly beings mushy and forces the human beings to talk slowly. A road appears from nowhere and a Chevy finds its way to the only bar within 20 miles. It has seen its most glorious times when noone would have thought of electing actors as presidents or governors. A cowboy enters the place, where one cigarette will dare to challenge his personified masculine force of nature.
This is the true story from the other side of the stub.' (text by Ella ;) )
You can download the animation here: Ashes to Ashes (37MB).
If you can't play the file you should download MediaPlayerClassic and ffdshow, whose newest versions can be found here: x264.nl.
In the next few days I'll be busy with my exams, so there won't be much time to shoot some new pics. But we're coming back, yes!
Woohoo, awesome animation. Great work! Cheers 8-) Btw I started posting daily at a separate gallery, and I will be posting weekly on the main one. http://aperture.blognds.com/daily Emré @ 2006-June-28 19:45
Glad to see you back around. I LOVE the details in this! The Godfather poster, the cigarette machine(!) -- so cool. I'll definitely check out the animation. Good luck! Brandon @ 2006-June-28 19:51

Missed you guys!
How long did you take to set this up? What's involved? Jide Alakija @ 2006-June-29 13:20
was wondering what you was getting up to!!! will have to check it out! looks rather good from the still and I'm quite impressed that its your first attempt ;) JD @ 2006-June-29 19:51
Your animation is hypnotic, the slow movement, low lighting, the dark country music (great selection, Ella!)- I don't smoke, but I think it would freak out many a smoker! You could sell it as an ad to an anti-smoking organisation!
I can't believe that was your first go at animation as a group! Congrats. fotojo @ 2006-June-30 01:35
Seb, Ella Waaazzzzuuuuppp from the Subster? :)
Good luck with your exams, have a nice weekend and absolutely very good work here.
Guys, the movie is great! I think if i could do something like that, i wouldn't be shooting lots of pictures anymore :-). Also love the soundtrack a lot! The end is great with the sigarette flying in slow motion and the bouncing on the grave ... Kris @ 2006-June-30 16:23
It looks like a great 3d animation.
What software did you use... lightwave? 3d StudioMax? Erik @ 2006-June-30 23:08
Cool animation! A lot of work must've gone into this. Michael @ 2006-July-1 12:02
Tolle Animatian, die Stimmung kommt echt genial rüber, man kommt sich vor wie im Wilden Westen :-) Karl Baumann @ 2006-July-2 18:13
Thank you all.
@Jide and Erik: We used 3D Studio Max 8 for the modelling and animation, Photoshop for textures and Combustion for DOF and motion blur. I was responsible for editing and sound and used Sony Vegas, Adobe Audition and Propelleheads Reason for some effects.
Theoretically we had a whole semester for the project, but in the end we had to do it in 2 months... Sebastian @ 2006-July-8 11:29
