World Cup victims: Subway map 2006-06-1617 Comments
When we arrived at the subway station yesterday, we saw that this underground map was completely burned. It has a size of more than a square meter, so you could not walk past without noticing. We don't know if tourists did this or locals just jumped on the opportunity to freak out because the German team won a lousy game against Poland. What we do know is that we don't like objects in our neighbourhood destroyed. I guess someone forget the World Cup slogan "A Time to Make Friends". We have another victim of fire for you tomorrow, since of course whoever did this could not stop at setting just one thing on fire.
We didn't post yesterday, because first of all Ella's Sony Vaio kept shutting down and we had to take care of the beast. Secondly Sebastian was weakened by German beer and McDonald's food, so he couldn't cope with shutter speeds slower than 1/30s and the interesting shots came out with shake. When we wanted to go out and do some re-shoots in the evening, we found out that our tripod has mysteriously disappeared, though we had not taken it anywhere for the past few days.
Pretty sad if you have the burn and destroy things to have some fun. The picture is cool though! :-) Kris @ 2006-June-16 12:31
Sad if this was ignited by football but, if so, it would have been as much by beer and McDonald's as by the ???game???. Impressive and substantial image and the barrier tape really clinches the composition. AG @ 2006-June-16 13:24
The different textures are fantastic, as is the slowly advancing burn area. I actually have a shot similar to this of a public map in downtown l.a. -- now you've got me thinking about processing it. Brandon @ 2006-June-16 16:41
Sounds like you all have a lot going on over there. Have you found the tripod? micki @ 2006-June-16 17:34
sorry for the tribulations - Computer Craziness Can be Consuming. Despite the arson, this photo is amazing. I love the play of light/dark across the image, and the toning is beatiful. Nice shot! Hope you find the tripod! chris @ 2006-June-16 17:36
I love the textures of this! Great shot. Michael @ 2006-June-16 18:19
Too bad that this is the downside of getting lots of people together - with alcohol some of them just seem to freak out. Luckily over here everything has been peaceful so far. Nicola @ 2006-June-16 19:41
I really like it, the contrast in the green and red, the darkness of it and the textures all really work. Just a bit sad because of the subject! I really don't get some people some times JD @ 2006-June-16 20:07
Richtig toll.
Wow! This photo is great. I love the processing of it. Can you Please let me know how you did?
This is your best work that I've seen. Erik @ 2006-June-16 22:32
Thank you all!
@micki and chris: No, we haven't found it yet. It doesn't make sense at all... :(
@Erik: Why do you think this is our best work?
There goes the processing:
- neutral export from RAW with 16:10 crop
- smart sharpen
- some shadow and highlight adjustment to keep some more shadow detail after the cross processing.
- Cross-processing using Shanzcan's XP actions
- selective colors to adjust the reds
- curves to alter the general toning
- reducing saturation by -30
- levels for decent blackpoint Sebastian @ 2006-June-16 23:52
Beautiful composition and color tone, great processing! 010design-photoblog @ 2006-June-17 08:44
I think this is a bit scary, like the burn after a war. But the red colours stands for some hope to me. eterisk @ 2006-June-18 12:45
I like the composition here, you see the what is burnt and the bands, telling the story very intensively. Striking as it is, good postprocessing and a great shot. Emré @ 2006-June-20 15:56
whilst obviously i don't condone the burning of things ... it sure as hell made a great picture!! .. something tells me though that the idiot didn't do it for arts sake ;( MrC @ 2006-June-26 07:41
How rude! I can't stand people who think that they can play folly with things that do not belong to them. christine @ 2006-June-26 17:11
