On sunday we went to this park in Stuttgart where a miniature steam engine takes the visitors on a trip around the place. Off the beaten track we found this guy hastily working on an engine which didn't seem to be working as planned and made for this photo opportunity. And before someone mentions it, yes, I took other pictures where more of his face is visible, but we liked this one the best for it's effect and symbolism.
The blacks in this photo are so rich! Wonderful toning. You definitely made the right choice with the man's face partially hidden by steam. It seems appropriate, given his job. Brandon @ 2006-June-6 17:59
This is a real chance character study and I???m struck by the desperate look you have caught in his eyes above that reluctant puff of steam. Brings back memories of those miniature locos, the excitement, the sounds and the smell of hot oil. Quality image for sure. AG @ 2006-June-6 18:44
i agree, i don't think the image would have been as strong had he not been partially obscured by the steam. the only thing that could have added more drama to this is if he was more dirty and sweaty. maybe topless... with a few war wounds.. and an I <3 MOM tattoo.. i'm getting carried away. schmee @ 2006-June-6 19:12
I agree; a very strong image and good composition. Nice one. garyx @ 2006-June-6 19:32
uh, hehe :P looks like a beard :D I like how it comes in his face though, it really shows the 'issue' of the picture :) Minna @ 2006-June-6 19:38
Excellent! Tibs @ 2006-June-6 21:24
Interesting shot. I like that the man expresion. Very nice contrast Manuel @ 2006-June-6 21:25
I'm glad you put this one up. The steam obscuring his face gives it a more realistic feel. Like he's quite desperate to get the thing going. Heath @ 2006-June-6 21:29
Wiedermal toll festgehalten :-) sieht aus als hätte er ´nen Bart. Karl Baumann @ 2006-June-6 22:45
This photo looks like it came straight out of the depression era in the 40's- overworked workers, hard physical labour etc. But the ghostly expression really makes it for me. I really like this shot. fotojo @ 2006-June-6 23:49
This shot is great. What a capture! Chris @ 2006-June-7 01:55
Wow ! Great B&W.
The steam adds a sorta surreal effect to it.
Love the contrast too ! Albedo @ 2006-June-7 06:27
Nice capture. Good BW. Interesting little backstory. I like the tilted perspective. Kind regards, Brent Brent Vermilyea @ 2006-June-7 06:32
this is awesome, very dramatic. i love how the smoke covers his face but yet u still see his eyes. ? sìkò @ 2006-June-7 09:26
This one is great! I really think your choice for this shot and composition was excellent! The steam coming up in front of the face really expresses the subject matter nicely. The tones and contrast are also incredible! Chris @ 2006-June-7 10:52
Elle & Seb, the Subeter is baaaaccck. Run fi cover all :)
I am loving this shot, I really am glad you did not post the one where all of his face is showing. His eyes say it all. He seems to be doing one thing with hsi body while his mind(eye) is elsewhere.
its santa on his mechanical sleigh ;) Tuan @ 2006-June-7 13:28

Excellent composition. The steam gives the image vibrancy. mooch @ 2006-June-7 18:16
Wundervoll den Moment eingefangen. Sehr gute Aufnahme! Homajon @ 2006-June-7 19:25
The steam kind of makes the shot, and creates drama. Very nice b&w processing. Great shot. thukai @ 2006-June-7 21:12
absolutly your best shot! just perfect, with lightning and everything! Bruno @ 2006-June-8 10:52
It's photos like these that I ask for the original and the EXIT data. I think you've achieved something major here. Please reveal more if you can. I'm looking to achieve stuff like this myself. Jide Alakija @ 2006-June-8 13:18
We're not posting daily right now but I think we're getting closer to the shots we really want do. Of course, if we happen to have enough material, we're going for the daily shot again.
@jide: Ok there we go:
ISO 100, 1/90s @ f/4.5, exp. bias -0.5, 57mm.
- Exported with color from RAW with absolutely flat contrast and minimal brightness to try to save some of those clipped areas.
- smart sharpen, lens blur mode, 40% 1.2 pix
- levels to set correct white and blackpoint (channel independent)
- masked levels to lighten the face a bit
- curves for higher contrast and more brightness
- saturation -100 (unusual for me, I normaly go with the channel mixer for B&W)
- curve for a very slight warm gradient
Hope this helps. Keep asking if you like ;) Sebastian @ 2006-June-8 14:02
this 'action' shot is great! love the way he looks bearded! MrC @ 2006-June-12 06:58
