As the success of his last guest post wasn't enough to convince our friend Björn to start his own photoblog, here is his next feature:
This is a totally improvised and last minute shot, taken through the glass window of a nearly empty bar lounge. I was already on my way home from a nice photo trip with a nice girl (who was not only photographically the subject of my attention) when we recognized this scenery. We would have liked to have a drink there, but that would have disturbed the picture :-)
We also came up with this BW version of the picture which we also like. Which one do you prefer and why?
have to say i'm well & truely in favour of the b&w version! .. as to why? er.. not sure really .. maybe because it's easier on the eye (to be honest, although it was a well composed picture, i wasn't impressed by the color version, but i always read the commentary .. so am glad to have discovered the b&w version, which i really really like!) .. sorry i'm not any more specific!

My vote goes to the b&w version, this time. As MrC says, it is difficult to explain why but it has something to do with the eye being distracted away from the flowers and shadow in the color pic . . the tabletop grabs too much attention in color as do the background lights. The intended sense of isolation works in either version but is, oddly, almost too much in color. AG @ 2006-May-5 14:52
I prefer the b/w version. I think it's because the white balance in the color version is a little warm (perhaps by design), but also because I generally like b/w photos better to start with. They're more timeless and look better in plain black frames with white mats. Ryan @ 2006-May-5 15:10
Colour works best for me. Lovely shot. I thought I took it...:D Jide Alakija @ 2006-May-5 15:48
Great composition! I prefer the coloured photo because there the light is more effective. Wolfgang @ 2006-May-5 17:31
sehr stark arrangiert mit diesen vielen Lichtern im dusteren Hintergrund. Und auch der helle Vordergrund wirkt wie abgedimmt.
Sehr schön! grapf @ 2006-May-5 19:37
Going with the color on this one. I like the tones, which I think are lost in BnW here. Nice shot Andy @ 2006-May-5 20:00
The colored version. Color can lend warmth, elegance and beauty to a picture that B&W washes out. While B&W has its place and I do enjoy it, the power of color always seems to make a bigger impression on me. Jazmin @ 2006-May-5 20:47
As a lover of greyscale pics, I like the color one best. First of all, the peach shades of the flowers and table are beautiful. Then, the spots of colore lights in the background are more dramatic on the black than in the black and white version. I like this pic so much that right now it's my favorite on your site. I think the flower shadow on the table gives thid image the "WOW" factor! cheers ;) david kleinert @ 2006-May-6 11:13
I like the color version, it seems to have more depth and feel to it. jasonspix @ 2006-May-6 16:51
I usually prefer b&w, but the color tones given by this type of light, are really nice here. Shadow cast by this light is equally nice! Chris @ 2006-May-8 00:48
nice image, like that background. cbtoday @ 2006-May-8 17:21
Colour color colour any day. Hey peeps, look again at both versions, can't you see whats lacking in the monochrome shot? The colour is packed with life, not the monochrome. I love monochrome shots, but there is always a time a place to use them, this definitely was not one of those times. Looks like smething I would have taken :)
